Since May 2005, the MBRC operates a containment biosafety level 3 laboratory (BSL3) accredited by Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, based on the new Guidelines on Laboratory Biosafety, 3rd edition, 2004. The MBRC offers private companies access services to NC3 for in vitro studies. You can therefore come and perform your work on pathogens in a safe and regulated environment or ask the specialized team of MBRC to execute the project. The architecture of the MBRC’s NC3 laboratory, its box-in-a-box concept, its negative pressure ventilation system, its equipment and its foolproof operating procedures stringently meet the most recent government requirements. Our biosafety experts will be able to advise you on NC3 throughout your research projects. In this laboratory, the MBRC’s research work will focus on identifying, from marine resources, new antibiotherapy and antiviral treatment solutions. Available equipment: - Two-door autoclave
- Biological safety cabinet
- Incubators
- Refrigerator, freezer, ultra-freezer
- Microscopes
- Assisted mode air-purifying respirators
| This laboratory allows work with the following strains, among other things: - Bacillus anthracis
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Hepatitis B virus
- Human immunodeficiency virus
- West Nile virus
- Rabies virus

Specification for the use of containment level 3 at the MBRC:
Use of a laboratory with an 82 m² surface area, including an adjacent microscopic room. Possibility of hosting one company at a time, thus increasing confidentiality. The laboratory is equipped with telephone, fax, computers and network for outside communication. The MBRC is in charge of the following aspects so that the company can focus entirely on its research: Decontaminated biomedical waste Routine maintenance The decontamination of the laboratory with a hydrogen peroxide decontamination system. This technique leaves no residue and does not affect in any way the apparatus or the equipment.
The MBRC also offers a support service to the company which is based on current regulations. This service includes the following: Review of the biological containment laboratory’s physical arrangement Development of operating and experimental procedures Review of operating and experimental procedures Hydrogen peroxide vapour decontamination process Follow-up of the decontamination Validation of the sterilization system Maintenance of microbial strains
